Teaching Philosophy

Teaching Philosophy:

Over the summer, and during our planning process, we have come to discover that we have very similar teaching styles and views on education and that our personal teaching philosophies blend extremely well. We both agree that it is important to teach the whole child. This means that besides academics; one of the most important jobs of a kindergarten teacher is teaching the social skills children will need to become good citizens.

We feel that the most important part of teaching children is caring. Our students are all unique and special. They have varied needs and wants, strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, and a future that we will help mould in a small way. As long as caring is there; we can be hurt by them, exasperated or unhappy with them, and still teach them and love them. We can NEVER be indifferent to them and still be successful. When we care, we act as a model that they are important and that their education is significant and worth caring about. As some of your child’s first teachers, we feel that we are helping them become life-long learners and establishing important learning habits that they will take with them throughout their academic years.

We strongly believe that building this kind of caring and trusting relationship between teacher and student enables our students to become much less afraid of making mistakes. It is important to take chances when first learning how to read or write in Kindergarten, and especially when starting to learn a new language. Showing the children respect is essential for them to develop the trust they need to take those risks and to grow as learners.

We also firmly believe that every child that enters our classroom door will become a success and because we hold these high expectations for each child in our classroom, they will feel they are valued and capable.

As every child is unique, we believe that each child has different strengths, diverse prior language learning experiences, and individual learning styles. Our instruction must be differentiated to provide enough challenge and support for all children to build on successfully and to develop positive attitudes about learning. We want children to be active learners and disciplined, creative thinkers; to learn to make good choices and to work cooperatively, and to be kind and responsible.  But most importantly we want every student to love coming to school each day and to feel safe, loved and appreciated in our little classroom family. As your child’s teachers we will strive on a daily basis to live by this teaching philosophy and aim to make it a fantastic year in Senior Kindergarten!
